    • Opal Ruth Collins Slay Seehorn Lynch passed away on Friday, May 24, 2013, at Paonia Care Center. She was 105.

      Opal was born in 1908 in Clear Fork to Carrie and Luther Collins. Opal was five when she started attending the school in Clear Fork. She attended high school in Crawford for three years and graduated from Gunnison High School in 1925.

      Opal furthered her education at Western State College and then taught at Onion Valley, near Maher. She also taught two years in DeBeque and than in New Castle and Uravan before turning to teach in Clear Fork for eight more years. She taught in Crawford from 1951 to 1969. She finished her teaching career in Cedaredge in 1971.

      Opal outlived her immediate family. Her sister Lilly died of diphtheria at eight. Sister Claudine Pipher died in 1959. Her brother John and sister Beth both died in 1995. Lynch’s father died in 1964. Her mother died in 1976, just before her 98th birthday.

      Opal was married three times, first to Herbert Slay in 1929. He died of heart failure in 1937. Her second husband, Robert Seehorn, passed away in 1957. She married John Lynch in 1964. He passed away in 1971.

      Although she had no children of her own, Opal loved and cherished her twelve nieces and nephews, thirty-six great nieces and nephews and three great great-nieces and nephew. Opal was able to live at home until she was 100. She taught school for 40 years. She was active in the Community United Methodist Church and UMW in Crawford and was a member of several organizations including: National Retired Teachers, Delta County Retired Teachers; Book & Study Club; Red Hat Women; and was the van coordinator for Senior Citizens.

      Opal Ruth Collins Slay Seehorn Lynch, 105, died on Friday, May 24, 2013, at Paonia Care Center. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2013, at the Crawford Community United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery.

      Opal is survived by 12 nieces and nephews, 36 great nieces and nephews, and three great-greatnieces and nephew. Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory. View the Internet obituary and sign the online guest registry at taylorfuneralservice.com.
